Dynamic Expression: The Structural Design of The St Botolph Building

B ARCH, RAIA, RIBA, ARB, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, Andrew Byrne
Grimshaw Architects

Andrew is a highly experienced architect across projects at a range of scales and his expertise spans the provision of all professional services. He has a proven track record of managing the design and construction process with extreme diligence. In the seven years he has spent at Grimshaw, he has worked closely with major commercial property developers in the City of London. This has included collaboration with Minerva and its contractor Skanska on the St Botolph Building in London’s EC3 insurance district. As the Associate responsible for this building, he was involved in all aspects of designing and delivering 51,950 sq m of speculative high-rise office accommodation, with two floors of multi-functional space and retail outlets on the lower levels. He ensured a high level of design quality was achieved within the value objectives of the development and his enthusiasm for engaging in the detailed technical requirements of both the developers and the occupiers resulted in the project being shortlisted for the 2011 British Council for Offices Commercial Workplace Award.

Andrew is currently the Associate Director in charge of the landmark London Bridge station redevelopment. The lynchpin of the Thameslink improvement project, this scheme ensures that the station forms a seamless and sympathetic integration with the neighbouring urban environment. The design includes a new concourse, greater in scale than the pitch at Wembley, which is situated at street level, beneath the tracks. As part of his leadership of the project, Andrew facilitated the streamlined introduction of an additional 8,000 sq m of commercial retail space to the scheme late in the design process.
